Brie and cranberry on artisan baguette (Pret a Manger, Marble Arch)

"Back by popular demand we present 3 slices of delicately flavoured French Brie on our slowly fermented artisan baguette, spread with spiced cranberry sauce, sprinkled with toasted pistachios and a scrunched up handful of wild rocket."

Pretty good sandwich but I’m not convinced by the inclusion of pistachios.

Isn’t airplane food disgusting? The vegetarian option always turns out to be vegan. This was dry tofu scramble with nasty potatoes. I managed to eat it all but it was not pleasant. On the side was a tough, chewy raisin bagel and a pot of fruit salad which you can see I already ate before I took this photo.

To give Air Canada some credit, at least this was an interesting and original breakfast concept for plane food.

The Hipster burger: Caramelized onions, avocado & havarti cheese on a gourmet veggie burger with a side of poutine (The Works Burger, Toronto, Canada)

When I finally got my full appetite back in Toronto it was time for my last meal there, so I went for a big one. The Works has a long list of combos for burger toppings that I would have loved to try but I went for a fairly safe option. The burger itself was super thick, in fact I would have preferred it to have been smaller. The poutine wasn’t the best so I’d recommend just getting a side salad or something else light to accompany the gigantic messy burger.

bbq burger / $11 (Fresh on Spadina, Toronto, Canada)
bbq sauce, quinoa onion rings, garlic mayo, napa cabbage, hot banana chilies, tomato & lettuce. A high-protein, made-from-scratch almond & grain burger patty served on a whole wheat bun with a side of marinated kale slaw.

This was really good and really filling. I definitely recommend this burger if you’re trying to pick from their selection.

Timbits (Tim Hortons, Niagara Falls, Canada)

This picture sucks but essentially they are just little donut balls in a mix of flavours. My Flatmate insisted I had to get some in Canada so I did. I ate all these in one go. Were they anything special? No. I wouldn’t get them again or recommend them. They looked cute though.

Mac ‘n’ Cheese burrito – with fried potatoes & chili aioli (Hot Beans, Toronto, Canada)

I had to go back to Hot Beans to try this burrito. I saw them making it on my first visit and it looked like my dream food combination. Sadly in execution it lacked cheesy flavour and was verrrry dry and stodgy. I couldn’t even finish it. Perhaps I need to make my own version at home…

TVP burrito – tender chunks of ancho-spiced soy protein (Hot Beans, Toronto, Canada)

This was really enjoyable, the sauce packed a punch of flavour and the TVP had a great texture though after a while the chewiness got a bit tiresome.

Buddha bowl (Fresh on Spadina, Toronto, Canada)
thai peanut sauce with marinated tofu cubes, tomato, cilantro, cucumber, bean sprouts, chopped peanuts, herbs & spices. Served over brown rice.

I subbed fried tofu for marinated, but didn’t end up eating any of this in the restaurant. I had the worst migraine and got the waitress to box this up for me to takeaway. They must have thought I was crazy.

So the second picture is how I actually ate this, back in my hostel. Doesn’t it look like a mess? It was all cold by then but it still tasted good.

BBQ Plate: veggie chicken drumsticks served with corn on the cob, seasonal veggies and mashed sweet potatoes (Sadie’s Diner, Toronto, Canada)

The three drumsticks were great, very toothsome. All in all this was a tasty plate of food and if I’d had longer in Toronto I would have liked to go back and try more from this friendly, cute establishment.

Cheese pastry (Sobeys Supermarket, Toronto)

This pastry was just like the burek I had in Croatia! Flaky filo pastry with mild soft cheese inside. It was perfect picnic food to eat in the sunshine on Toronto’s Islands.
